I've recently been introduced to the calming grooves of Emancipator, and I was quite bummed to have missed his recent show in Chicago on Oct. 30. But the more I thought about it, the more I was actually happy I didn't waste my $44. There is something very depressing about standing there, witnessing a guy and his lap top; it makes me kinda nauseous. I like bands, you know...with instruments. That's what a real show is about.
Not to take anything away from electronic music. It's still music, and an art. It's just not something I'd spend money to watch live. I think electronic music is best listened to in the car, in the shower, at work, etc. It's excellent background noise for any moment.
I listen to a lot of music, as you already know. But there is something so tranquil and calming about this new style of classical, lo-fi, jazz-like electronica. Actually, I think I just made it sound a lot more complicated than it really is. It's probably the one genre I can listen to at any time of any day and feel better than I had moments before.
It's not ridiculously complicated or technical. It's simple, yet thought provoking. Peaceful, yet dramatic. It puts me in a dream. It's my drug. Who needs opiates, when you've got music?!
I hope it has a similar effect on you. Here are my two favorite Emanipator tracks, followed by two somewhat comparable tracks by similar artists.
Emancipator - Lionheart
Emancipator - Anthem
RJD2 - Smoke & Mirrors
Xploding Plastix - More Powah to You

Just use your imagination

I am thinking of someone right now. And I'm fantasizing about the things I would do to him at this moment, if he were in front of me right now...this song playing in the background.
I've been to strip clubs; I know what kind of music these chicks dance to. Amateur.
It requires a certain level of intensity, passion and awareness to pull this off. But when I think of him, I know I could drive him crazy with this little concoction of song and body language.
Nite Jewel - What Did He Say

And this isn't a one-way street now. If this person wanted to return the favor, provide the same pleasure, this is all he'd need. He would touch me, skin on skin, at this song's pace. He would follow its ups and downs while expressing his desire. Like fire feeding on fire.

Season of love

Today officially marks the start of fall season, and I couldn't be more ecstatic. Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the colors of the leaves and the smell of the crisp, cool air. And I finally get to sport my favorite scarves, hats, boots, etc. Whatever it takes to warm me up.
This also is a time for lovers. I mean, really, what is more satisfying than cuddling up next to your loved one under the blankets, sharing your warmth with one another? Or taking a walk in the park, holding hands, as the leaves crunch beneath your boots. I envision fireplaces, hot cocoa and making out. Lots of making out.
And I can't have a healthy winter make-out session without a warm, soothing playlist. So here's my attempt at creating a soundtrack to set the tone for a night in with your lover. I'm making this a long list, folks, so download the tracks and burn yourself a CD.
I know I may seem cold and cynical at times. I preach of the single life and how good it feels to be content by oneself. Deep down, I'm just as soft as the next girl. And these tracks bring out the lover in me.
Milosh - You Make Me Feel
Telefon Tel Aviv - I Lied
Beck - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes
The XX - Teardrops
Beth Gibbons - Romance
Mylo - Need You Tonite
Bombay Dub Orchestra - Feel
Morcheeba - Undress Me Now
Soil & Pimp Sessions - Ha Hen
Boomclap Bachelors - Combiner
The Sea And Cake - New Schools
Pinback - Penelope
