All of these emotions are pouring outta me

It has been brought to my attention that my social persona may conflict with my inner self, the core that is me. Ever since I've started this blog, I've befriended many online friends. People who only know me through Blogger or Twitter or Facebook, etc. And on some occasions, I come into contact with these new friends. But when they meet me, they have this idea in their head of what I'm like, and I'm usually disappointed when they tell me their first impressions.

It usually goes something like this: "I thought you were this crazy party animal who lives only to dance at the clubs." Something about my online image gives people this idea that I'm superficial, insensitive, self-centered or cold...or all of the above. That's buggin' me out.

There's more to me than meets the eye.

I chose this track to relate to this moment I'm having right now. Kid Cudi is OK, nothing brilliant or groundbreaking here. But I can appreciate what he's trying to express through this song. There's depth there, and it just feels honest and raw.

So just like he says, "I've got some issues that nobody can see, and all of these emotions are pouring out of me." Get to know me before you judge me, folks.

The more you try to erase me, the more I appear

Lupe Fiasco + Pharrell + Kanye West = a stellar masterpiece!

Are you kidding me? As soon as I saw this track pop up on my IMEEM playlist, I had to give it a listen. And I'm slightly upset that I just heard this for the first time. Apparently it's been out for a couple years now. Oh well! To make the track even hotter (as if it wasn't hot enough), they mixed in Thom Yorke's "Eraser."

Lupe kills this track. That's all I got to say!

Happy 420!

This one's for you, tokers. Here in Chicago, it's quite gloomy...but I suppose that's perfect weather to blaze one up and meditate. So here is a jam just for you on this day of herbal celebration. For those of you partaking, you'll instantly understand the lyrics and their meaning. For those of you on the opposing side of the great weed debate, try listening to this track, and maybe you'll gain a better understanding.

For your convenience, here are the lyrics. Now, roll one up and press play.

People Under The Stairs - Acid Raindrops

Lets have a mid city fiesta with your west L.A. connections
Hop inside the vehicle start crossing intersections
We learning life's lessons
While we blaze this herbal essence
A man was still a child and I have so many questions
A struggle on my life till we vade the misconceptions
To find a place to live between the negatives and positives
While trying to make money slanging synonyms and homonyms
I went to pops house so I can visit moms and him
Cut to the mall got them brand new pair of timberlands
Then dipped down a one way trying to skew up double k
And chill with my people on this bright and sunny day
My nigga spliff was sippin Beck's I'm slappin hands with guests
Ok the shady spot so we can circulate the stress
Mary Jane invades my brain now I can't complain
I'm sayin what else is there to do besides relax
Let the problems in your mind become ancient artifacts
Perhaps these raps can help you alleviate
The things that's got you trippin' you watch me demonstrate
First you ignore the nonsense and clear your conscience
Let your pen touch the paper write verbs and consonants
As the words become a sentence you start to feelin' different
The stress is out your mind you feel like the weight was lifted
Terrific I'm glad we had this time to discuss
I'm outro call me if you want to blaze one up

[Chorus]
When the stress burns my brain just like acid raindrops,
Mary Jane is the only thing that makes the pain stop.
I let the music take over my soul, body and mind
To kick back relax one time and you goin' find
When the stress burns my brain just like acid raindrops,
Mary Jane is the only thing that makes the pain stop.
Just let the music take over my soul, body and mind
To kick back relax one time and you goin' find

I try to keep it stress free take everyday at a time
Make sure the families in place and let the music unwind
I got men to take charge like major outlet
Ride around the country chillin' in my L.A. express
On every street corner
The importance of having fun
If he bottle spill tobacco don't nobody carry guns
We keep our minds on fun and let the drums do the bangin'
On any given day like Mr. Cooper yo we hangin'
Under the blue sky the state laced the small
Belucchi quarter inched cables with all the sound that we brawl
Can't get enough so brother pass another cold one
Feel like a dad at a ball game mappin' with his son
Chuck D yo word up we buggin' over time
From the light to the lime original star time
It's the double criss one
It camel brought the ammo so we can shoot
Game like thugs on your sport channel
Take off the du-rag replace it with a thinkin' cap
If you didn't know tell the bro he should have known that
We here for one thing and that's to remain
What's the name...name...name...nigga

Yo L.A. hit me one time make it funky
Double down on my underground sound I'm feelin' lucky
For this jackpot I jacks pot to feelin my crips
We lay back chillin' and feelin' the music relates
We on the to the two hangin with my crew
Bullshittin' while we sittin down drinkin our Sabu
And to the afternoon turns to the moonlight
Funky tracks and nickle sacks freestylin all night
Doin it right no one with time music make it better
My crew banging two blocks like shots from my berretta
Snub no's to the hoes who pose I suppose
Honey you gotta understand your mans got flows
And I'm leavin you so by the time I get the phoenix
Underground ground hits are goin to fiend this musical genius
Transglobal by the books
Like Barnes with noble hooks
Armed with overlooked talented guests of while bless crooks
Who still lose and keep this shit alive
Something for your truths to sit around and bye bye
For camel double invest to ease stress
We bout to hip hop so have fun and god bless

Pop collars to this
Wear ice to this
Drink crys to this
Yo is there somethin we missed
Pop collars to this
Wear ice to this
Drink crys to this
Is there somethin we missed?
Yeh like my two way
Throw boes and do the shoulder shake
We throwin boes up in here
Do the shoulder shake
Oh shit my two way
Oops my shoulder shake

Introspective lyricism by OutKast

One group I have neglected quite a bit in the recent past is OutKast, which also happens to be one of my favorite hip-hop groups of all time. But ever since the release of Speakerboxx/The Love Below, OutKast left me with a pretty horrible taste in my mouth... which I recently discovered was mostly due to the tracks that received any airplay. I wasn't a fan of "The Way You Move," "Hey Ya" and "Roses." They all sounded pretty corny to me. So ever since, I haven't given OutKast much thought. Until this past weekend...

As I spent the early portion of my Friday night at my good pal James' house, he had all his favorite OutKast tracks looping on his iTunes. First, let me tell you: When I hear old OutKast, it takes me back to my high school days. Cutting class, going to parties, keg stands, beer bongs, spin the bottle, etc. OutKast was always playing in the background.

Anyhow, I was jammin' to all these OutKast songs with my pal and I instantly remembered why I loved them so much back then. And we even listened to some of the Speakerboxxx tracks, and I realized it's not as horrible an album as I once thought. First, I heard "Bust" and this track absolutely reminds me of their older stuff. It's rough, it's hard, it's aggressive. A few tracks later, we listened to "Da Art of Storytellin' (Part 2)" off the Aquemini album. This jam made me remember why Aquemini is by far OutKast's greatest album. Andre 3000 and Big Boi focus on moral issues, the melodies and lyrics are soulful, and the entire album takes the listener on a spiritual journey.

So these two songs have been on repeat for the past three days, and I don't see myself getting sick of them anytime soon. Enjoy the throwback, folks!

And thank you, James :)

Stars & Stripes

Have you ever heard of Adrian Champion? Yea...neither have I, but thankfully, my good friend Brian forwarded his album, Stars & Stripes: The White Stripes Reimagined, to me. It's pretty much a collection of mash-ups featuring classic White Stripes tracks with some of hip-hop's greatest. I normally hate this sort of thing; you may already know about my distaste for the Jay-Z/Linkin Park album. But this album was a pleasant lil' surprise. So I thought I'd share my favorite track with you.

And forget about blasting it on your cheap computer speakers; they will do this song no justice. This is a track you need to bob your head to in your ride while cruising the streets with the windows down low.

Another gem...just for you...let me know what you think! I think this'll continuously play on my summer soundtrack this year.

Wake up...it's Monday!

I'm not a big fan of mash-ups. Ever since Jay-Z and Linkin Park came out with that horrible mash-up album, I was completely turned off. However, my good pal Justin introduced me to this track yesterday, and I found it to be quite catchy. And really...you can't go wrong with some dope Biggie vocals. And the Justice remix of MGMT's "Electric Feel" has a great beat; it's only natural these two tracks would sound amazing together.

And since Biggie, one of the greatest rappers of all time, passed away on this day 12 years ago, I found this post absolutely fitting. Enjoy...

Hip hop lives

You know I love to show love for my local artists, and these guys deserve some serious props. I know close to nothing about Dynamic Vibrations. But what I do know is this: They're Chicago. They're hip hop. And they're fly.

Somehow two Dynamic Vibrations CDs found their way into my car a couple of months ago, and I haven't been able to stop rocking to their fresh and funky beats since. These brilliant lyricists are proof that true hip hop hasn't died, despite the growing popularity of crap rap artists like Soulja Boy and Flo Rida. I mean, as my good friend, Zipporah, brought to my attention...does Soulja Boy even have the mental capability to rap let alone speak proper English?

Anyhow, please take a few minutes to jam to these tracks. Let me know what you think. And keep faith that hip hop is alive and kicking. You just gotta shut off that noise on mainstream pop radio, and you'll find it.

A lil' Snoop never heart nobody...

I just heard this song a moment ago on one of my favorite internet radio stations, 1.FM, and I had to share it. But then I heard Snoop, and now I'm wondering, do they play this song on the radio? Am I just that far behind on pop music?

Anyhow, give it a listen. It's fun.
